Cameron Hill hungry to continue momentum upon Darwin return

Repco Supercars Championship rookie Cameron Hill brings to Darwin plenty of momentum after his season best performance at Symmons Plains Raceway.

It was an impressive performance from Hill at a circuit he had no prior knowledge of as he left the Apple Isle with three top 10 qualifying results and a new highest finish of eighth, further improving upon his previous bests in Perth.

The Repco Supercars Championship moves to Darwin where Hill has a winning history having been victorious in the opening race of Porsche Carrera Cup Australia during the 2019 season. This experience will provide an advantage compared to his rookie contemporaries in terms of the heat the event is renowned for.

Acknowledged as a favourite event within the Supercars paddock, Darwin will once again celebrate the indigenous history of Australia and Truck Assist Racing revealed earlier this week its livery for the event.

Hill aims to build on his results from Symmons Plains and enact learnings taken while racing against some of the championship’s best drivers.

Another SuperSprint event, the Darwin Triple Crown will use the same Dunlop Super Soft tyres as the previous round across 35 lap events. Unlike Tasmania, the schedule is spaced out across three days ensuring a more spaced out program.

Opening practice for the Darwin Triple Crown begins at 10:45am ACST or 11:15am AEST, Friday June 16.

“Supercars in Darwin has got a really good atmosphere, I saw it up there when I was racing in Porsche Carrera Cup Australia in 2018 and 2019,” said Hill.

“It’s very cool the way the whole of Darwin gets behind the event and attends the racing, plus being able to show off the indigenous liveries is a great thing, with our Truck Assist Racing Camaros looking excellent.

“The weather is pretty nice up there although it makes it fairly warm inside the cars, which will be something we’ll have to manage. For sure it’s going to be super hot and I think it’s just part of Supercar racing in being able to deal with the extremes and certainly Darwin is where we see some of the highest cabin temperatures.

“It was pretty cool to have my best results at a circuit I’d never been to before, so maybe we’re starting to head in the right direction. We had a great showing in Tasmania, but we’ve seen how competitive it is this season and it really doesn’t take much to be shuffled back. We’ll definitely be trying to focus on executing all of those little areas, especially qualifying to ensure we can have another good round.

“It was a great experience to be racing up there and dare I say it I found it a bit easier to be competing inside the top 10 compared to 20th. I learnt a few things including on the tyre management side, there are a few guys who are exceptional at being able to drive fast and looking after their tyres. It’s something I’m going to continue to work on and hopefully we can go the distance at this event.

“The vibe in the team is very strong at the moment. They’ve come off the back of a few tough years and they really see this season as an opportunity to take a big step forward. Everyone is super motivated to keep pushing up.

“To have two cars qualify inside the top 10 and race in it for most of the weekend in Tasmania was a very exciting moment, so we’re hoping to try to make that the norm."
